Tips when hikingHiking is one of the favorite outdoor activities of many people. It is a great activity for many people. Some people think it is dangerous but actually it isn’t. You just have to pay attention to some safety measures to ensure that you will really enjoy it.

Hiking Safety Rules

Here is a list of some safety tips when hiking. Some of the tips could also be applied when camping or backpacking.

  • Prepare all the safety equipment that you will be needing like a compass, a whistle, a pocket knife, binoculars, walking sticks and others.
  • Get the right safety hiking gear like hiking boots and socks.
  • Plan your hiking well. You should never hike without a good plan of your route. You also need to check the weather and trail conditions. Notify a family member or a friend about your plans.
  • Carry a map with you even if you feel confident about the trails you plan to trek.
  • Use the whistle when you walk through a bear country to alert the bears that you are passing through. It can also save you in case of emergencies.
  • If you plan to hike with your kids (even if you don’t), you need to bring a first aid kit. You also have to teach them how to read a map or markings and that they need to stay on the trail. It’s better to assign a hiking buddy to each of your kid.
  • Pack properly for your hike. Wear brightly colored clothing. If you opt to use sneakers, you need an ankle support.
  • Hike at your own level. If you need frequent breaks, so be it. Don’t push yourself too hard.
  • Bring your own water or water filter for drinking.
  • Keep all food in tightly sealed containers.
  • Have a fire source and you should be able to spark a fire. This could be a job for the guide or for everyone. Have your own techniques in producing fire.
